Issue Position: Health Care

Issue Position

Stephanie has advocated for health care reform since she was first elected to Congress, and she is committed to working to improve health care access, quality, and affordability in South Dakota. Although she could not support the recent legislation that passed the House, the bill does include a number of good provisions that she does support, including eliminating insurance companies' ability to exclude people with preexisting conditions or to cancel coverage if you get sick. She also supports the provisions allowing children to stay on their parents' insurance until age 26, as well as the creation of transparent health insurance exchanges for individuals and small businesses, where private insurers compete for their business. She was disappointed that the final product that the Congress voted on was not, on balance, a bill she could support. She believes the bill, overall, was too expensive. But, she believes that now it's important to focus on the ways we can work together to preserve what is good in the bill, and fix where it falls short. While some have called for repealing the law, Stephanie thinks the better way forward is to work together to continue to improve this bill and our health care system for all.
