I understand how important farmers are to our economy, and to the values that guide us in our everyday lives. We need to support farmers across Upstate New York in their effort to provide us with the safest, most reasonably priced and most plentiful supply of food in the world. We must also recognize that our food supply is a national security issue, and treat it with the same importance that we give to the other ways we protect Americans.
As a member of the Agriculture Committee I will fight for fair trade policies that benefit local farmers to make sure they get fair prices for their goods. As the third largest dairy producing state in the nation, it is critical that our dairy farmers receive a fair price for their milk to ensure that this industry remains strong. When the Agriculture Committee crafts the 2012 Farm Bill, I will be working with my colleagues to protect dairy farmers from devastating price fluctuations and to ensure that farm policy works for both producers and consumers to make our local economy work better for everyone. In Congress, I am committed to keeping New York's farms healthy and strong for generations to come.
Broader rural development must also be a priority for us. From rural broadband expansion to issues of water supply and rural housing, I will fight to improve the lives of rural New Yorkers.
