FactCheck.org Debunks Rep. Hare's Campaign Commercial

Americans for Tax Reform pledge does not "protect tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas."

A recent campaign commercial from Rep. Hare claims that Bobby Schilling signed a pledge with the Americans for Tax Reform that would "protect tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas." According to FactCheck.org, that claim is blatantly false. Democrats have been using this lie in commercials across the country, as almost every Republican has signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge. The full text of the pledge is below:

"I will:
ONE, oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax
rates for individuals and/or businesses; and
TWO, oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and
credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates."

FactCheck.org said the following about the claim:

"But we find the ad to be false. The pledge only protects corporations from an increase in taxation overall. It explicitly allows elimination of any specific tax deduction or credit if matched dollar-for-dollar by an overall cut in rates. And it says nothing about jobs."

Terry Schilling, campaign manager for the Bobby Schilling campaign, said he is surprised by how low the Hare campaign seems to be willing to go.

"It's one thing to attack Bobby, but it's another to completely lie about him," Schilling said. "They're going to do everything they can to slander him for the next 47 days, and I get it -- they have nothing else to run on. It's part of the game. Still, I guess I thought a sitting Congressman would be a little bit more dignified. I clearly thought wrong."
