San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Opposes Possible 10% CSU Fee Hike

Lieutenant governor candidate and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom
issued the following statement today regarding a possible 10% fee hike by CSU trustees.

"I am deeply disappointed that yet another fee increase -- which would be 9th hike in 10 years -- is being considered by the CSU trustees. Raising fees by 10%, after being raised by the same percentage in May 2009, poses an unacceptable burden on our state's students and their families. California's economy depends on an educated work force, and we can only achieve that through access to our state's university systems. Our middle class faces enough challenges without educational opportunities becoming more and more unobtainable. We must look to alternative sources of revenue to fund higher education instead of ratcheting up student costs. Educating California's students is an essential investment in the future viability of our state."
