On the heels of new information that the Internal Revenue Service may subject Ohio veterans' bonuses to federal taxes, Congressman Zack Space (OH-18) today announced that he would be filing legislation to circumvent IRS action.
Space is a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.
"I just don't understand the logic the IRS is using. If a veteran's own home state is exempting them from taxes on these bonuses, I have no earthly idea why the IRS wouldn't automatically do the same thing," Space said. "I don't know how this happened, but I assure you that I'm going to fight tooth-and-nail to give our veterans what they deserve."
"How can we pay the debt that we owe our veterans -- and then have the IRS try to take it away? These Ohioans have given of themselves so selflessly in the defense of our country -- and they deserve every last cent of this bonus."
Since learning of this news on Friday, Congressman Space and his staff have consulted with Congressional staff to let them know that the Congressman will soon introduce legislation to make veterans' bonus checks exempt from federal taxes.
