For the past few years, I have been working with the unemployed, people struggling to hang on until they can find work. I see every day the face of joblessness and I know how critical it is to get Nevadans back to work. Our economy will not fully recover until we reduce our unemployment rate.
Earlier this year, I voted for a bill to create 8000 jobs by funding road projects. Almost a million dollars in funding was recently released for these projects, with 70% of the funding coming to Southern Nevada
For several years now, we've heard how important renewable energy will be as a source of clean, domestically produced energy. Renewable energy development also creates new jobs. Nevada has solar, wind and geothermal energy sources that can be used to make our state the center for renewable energy production in the Southwest. I strongly support incentives that increase our renewable energy output and that bring renewable energy jobs to Nevada. Our efforts at job creation cannot stop at road and building construction and renewable energy. We must work to diversify our economy. A special legislative committee has been looking at steps that can be taken to make Nevada a hub for manufacturing and distribution of goods in the Western United States. We'll consider this committee's recommendations during the next legislative session.
