Miller: Update on the Stability of Enbridge Line 6B

U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee, received a status update from Enbridge and asked for further information regarding the Line 6B pipeline and their own discovery of over 200 anomalies, some of which are potentially injurious defects, occur between mileposts 650 and 753. The mileposts in question cut through many environmentally sensitive areas, including 21 miles in Macomb County and 15 miles in St. Clair County.

"It is very encouraging that the oil spill cleanup in Marshall, MI is nearly complete, however, we still must discover what caused this incident and investigate fully any additional potential dangers that exist," Miller said. "I have been in contact with Enbridge, and they are conducting their own investigation into where the known injurious defects that have been reported in the Line 6B pipeline are, what steps they are taking to repair or replace the sections of the pipeline that are weakened and what kind of timeline we can expect to have these repairs completed. Enbridge is committed to providing these specific answers and seeing to it that further safety precautions are in place. The T&I Committee hearing is scheduled for September 15th in Washington, DC and we will examine all of the events that led up to this disaster."

Last week, Congresswoman Miller called on the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the T&I Committee to expand their investigation in Enbridge Line 6B pipeline spill, particularly in the areas near the St. Clair River in Michigan. On July 26th along the Kalamazoo River in Marshall, MI, the Enbridge Line 6B pipeline resulted in approximately one million gallons of crude oil being spilled into the river.
