Known as the "Sunshine State", Maria believes that we should be a leader in alternative and renewable energy. As a State Senator, she will work to develop these new technologies not only to lessen our dependence on foreign oil and protect our environment, but also to use "green" technologies to generate new industries and jobs for our citizens.
Maria successfully sponsored HB 229, which provides for a renewable energy source property tax exemption and is part of the Florida House Energy Bill. She stands as a key member of the Democratic Caucus Energy Team and participated in a press conference to present the Democratic Energy Package. Further, she organized a private tour of the University of Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences and its "crown jewel", The Florida Center for Renewable Energy. There, the group conferred with scientists and participated in a discussion to put our state on the forefront in the use of renewable energy
