Wynne LeGrow Issues Statement on Social Security

Location: Emporia, VA

In response to recent proposals to reduce Social Security benefits, Dr. Wynne LeGrow, the Democratic Nominee for Congress in Virginia's 4th District, issued the following statement:

"Our country now faces a national debt of over $13 trillion. It is clear that we must address this issue in order to maintain Social Security's solvency. When Social Security was initiated, there were about 16 people paying into the program for each collector. Now fewer than three individuals pay in for every recipient.

"Before agreeing to any changes in Social Security that would place a burden on middle-class and lower-income seniors, we need to eliminate the Bush tax cuts for individuals making over $250,000 each year and stop spending billions of dollars each month propping up corrupt governments in Iraq and Afghanistan. We cannot discuss reducing Social Security benefits or increasing the retiring age as long as these reckless Bush-era policies are allowed to continue."

A July 2010 Gallup poll found that 60% of Americans under the age of 65 expect to never receive Social Security benefits, and 77% of Americans believe that Social Security "has major problems" or "is in a state of crisis."
