In a speech Thursday marking the 90th anniversary of women being granted the right to vote, U.S. Senate candidate Elaine Marshall called on Alan Simpson to resign as co-chair of President Obama's fiscal commission following derisive comments the former Wyoming Senator made about Social Security recipients.
"Alan Simpson's remarks were disrespectful to women and to social security recipients. He should resign or the President should fire him," Marshall said, speaking at the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte.
"The fact that he thinks this way shows that he can't do his job with an open mind. We should be doing everything in our power to strengthen and protect Social Security, not attacking the recipients who depend on it."
In an email sent Tuesday, August 24, to Ashley Carson, Executive Director of the National Older Women's League, Alan Simpson wrote: "I've made some plenty smart cracks about people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree. You know "em too. It's the same with any system in America. We've reached a point now where it's like a milk cow with 310 million t**s! Call when you get honest work!"
