Jon Barela, the Republican Candidate for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, issued the following statement today, responding to Congressman Martin Heinrich's claims in the Albuquerque Journal today that his economic policies have saved jobs in New Mexico and that "we've seen some progress". Heinrich's remarks were made on the same day it was announced 500,000 jobs were lost bringing unemployment numbers to a nine-month high.
"Martin Heinrich is now claiming that his far-left agenda of runaway spending,
bailouts, tax increases, and bloated debt has somehow put our economy on a better course. It's an absurd claim." Barela said. "His policies have suffocated economic growth, leading to reduced incentives for small businesses to invest in either capital or labor. Our economy is not on track, and many believe it could be headed toward a double-dip recession. The latest unemployment numbers for New Mexico show that Washington's policies have failed to put New Mexicans back to work and it is time for a new course."
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.nr0.htm) New Mexico is one of the top three states for the largest over-the-year-percentage decrease in employment with a decrease of 1.3 percent. New Mexico's unemployment rate is 8.2 percent.
