Price Asks House Members to Support Good Governance, Oppose Lame Duck

Statement

Date: Aug. 9, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement asking every Member of the House of Representatives to support his good governance resolution pledging not to hold a lame duck session except in the case of a sudden, unforeseen national emergency. The text of the resolution is available here.

"Democrats are trying to avoid accountability by delaying the passage of a national energy tax and other unpopular policies until after Election Day," said Congressman Price. "Some might think that is a good way to override the will of the public, but it is a terrible way to govern. A lame duck session should not be used as a post-election blitz to impose liberal programs that Americans do not support.

"After 19 months of being totally ignored, Americans have lost all trust that Washington listens to or cares about what they have to say. It is time to restore the public trust and make Congress accountable to the people once again. That means bringing backroom deals into the light of day, actually reading legislation before voting on it, and taking a clear stand on the issues before voters go to the polls.

"I am asking every Member of the House to take a pledge not to trample on the will of their constituents in a lame duck session. It is the very least that Americans should be able to expect from their Representatives in Congress."
