Today, Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson applauded Senate passage of $600 million in fully paid-for border security funding. The bill passed the Senate this morning by unanimous consent.
"We need to secure the borders and enforce laws that are on the books," said Senator Nelson. "This funding will get more boots on the ground and help secure the border to keep those that are trying to come here illegally from entering our country. Before we're able to address immigration reform, we must get the border secured and enforce the laws that we already have."
Most recently, Senator Nelson met with Alan Bersin, Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in June to review federal efforts to keep the border secure. In the meeting, Commissioner Bersin expressed to Senator Nelson that the agency has made strides in securing the border and is hopeful by the end of the year that it will be nearly secured. In June, Senator Nelson also met with John Morton, Assistant Secretary of US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to discuss similar issues.
