Congresswoman's campaign caught working to discredit challenger's military service

Republican Candidate for Congress Adam Kinzinger released the following statement Thursday requesting an explanation from Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson after her campaign was caught this week working to discredit Kinzinger's service in the United States military. More than 48 hours have passed since the activity was exposed, but Halvorson has remained silent. An Air Force Captain, Kinzinger has served honorably for seven years and completed five stints in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Below please find Kinzinger's statement, followed by a link to the Southtown Star Editorial exposing the Halvorson campaign's efforts to "dirty" the challenger:

"Congresswoman Halvorson and her campaign have been caught working to discredit my seven years in the United States Air Force, and capitalize on national headlines to create doubt in the minds of voters regarding my service. It is telling and disappointing that the Congresswoman and her staff have remained silent on the matter ever since after it was revealed that they have been working quietly behind the scenes to undermine my record and urge media to report on possible inconsistencies.

"Incredibly, the Halvorson campaign pushed this story knowing it lacked substance. Such dishonestly is unacceptable from any leader seeking elected office, and becomes even more stunning given the Congresswoman's position on the House Veterans Affairs Committee. At the very least, Congresswoman Halvorson owes an explanation to the Veterans she purports to serve for the behavior of her campaign.

"Debbie Halvorson is fond of saying that she honors veterans -- but that clearly does not include the veterans who get in her way politically."
