Job seekers of all ages and backgrounds gathered at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College today to pick up tips on making themselves more marketable to employers in a competitive job market.
"SearchSmart 2010," a one-day seminar for people looking to hone their competitive edge, was the product of collaboration between the Bay Area and Fox Valley Workforce Boards, NWTC and Fox Valley Technical College and partnership Congressman Steve Kagen. The sessions were held simultaneously In Green Bay, Appleton and Marinette.
Representatives from area businesses, including Humana, Marinette Marine, Thyssen-Krupp, Time-Warner, Thedacare and Tyco-Ansul shared insights meeting employer expectations, avoiding disqualifying pitfalls and making the most of technology and creating an effective resume.
"Here in Wisconsin, we know that on a level playing field our skilled workers can compete - and win - against anyone in the world," Kagen said. " It will require a great deal of effort and shared sacrifice from all of us, but I am convinced today more than ever that when we focus our attention on making things here in America again, we will be able to work our way back into prosperity."
Jim Golembeski, Executive Director of the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, emphasized the value of the putting job seekers in direct contact with employers and human resources representatives.
"This was a real opportunity for job seekers to hear directly from area employers what can make or break a job application or interview," Golembeski said. "Most f us never know why we aren't considered when we apply for a job. Congressman Kagen, the members of our job center partnership and our technical colleges were very pleased to be able to put together this unique opportunity for people seeking employment in NE Wisconsin.".
