I believe in protecting the precious water resources of Southwest Colorado and have proven that with my voting record and the bills I've sponsored at the Capitol. Careful management is needed to protect our agricultural, municipal and recreational interests. Water is the lifeblood of our communities.
My educational background is steeped in natural resources science and policy, including water law. I've carried water legislation to help secure small water projects in rural Colorado and, in 2010, I successfully passed a bill for the Colorado Attorney General to help him protect surface water rights owners from illegal takings of their precious water.
Water is critical in keeping agriculture alive and thriving in Colorado and, in 2008, the Colorado Farm Bureau gave me a 94.7% score on the votes important to them. In 2010, Colorado Farm Bureau gave me a 100% rating and designated me for the "Friend of Farm Bureau" award for my exceptional voting record in line with the Colorado Farm Bureau positions. Adequate water storage continues to be a challenge for a state like Colorado that is the headwaters of many rivers. I will keep working on this challenge to make sure agriculture, energy development, and growing communities on the Western Slope are well protected for the future.
