It's essential to protect our private property rights and to allow individuals to prosper based on their own work ethic and efforts.
My first year in the state legislature I carried a bill to protect the private property rights of farmers and ranchers when mineral development is to take place on their property. Western mining law gives a property right to the mineral owner to develop the property below the surface, but that development should not occur without due consideration of the property rights of the surface owner. It was not easy, but in drafting and passing the legislation, I worked with all parties to find a reasonable accommodation of the private property rights of all concerned.
