Lt. Gov. Diane Denish today applauded the passage of the federal Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistant Act (HR 1586), which will provide the state $64.8 million in education funds and likely saved the jobs of more than 1,000 New Mexico teachers. Following passage of the bill, Denish released the following statement:
"As the proud product of New Mexico's public school system, I know firsthand how important good teachers are to making sure our children have an opportunity to succeed. We must stand by our dedicated teachers today and every day. Even during difficult budget times, laying off teachers is simply not an option. I applaud the members of our state Congressional Delegation for voting for this important job-saving bill."
