Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and LIPA President Kevin Law applauded a FEMA Grant to reimburse the extraordinary expenses involved in rebuilding power lines destroyed by last Winter's storms and that knocked out power for 19,000 Long Island families. The Nor'easter from Hurricane Ida hit with devastating power on November 12 through 14 and took significant resources to restore power and rebuild the grid.

"Long Island took a huge hit from the powerful storms last November," Israel said. "Just as FEMA steps in when there are floods in Iowa, it is equally important that they provide resources when Mother Nature hits our region. This grant will help mitigate costs that could have been passed on to ratepayers."

'We welcome the federal disaster assistance awarded to LIPA for the November Nor'Easter,' said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. "Long Island has experienced some significant weather events in the past months and assistance like this helps to us to improve our transmission and distribution system and allows LIPA to continue to provide safe, reliable power."

The federal grant totals $2,365,870.06 and is 75% share of the $3,154,493.41 total cost. During the Nor'easter, LIPA suffered damages due to high winds and rain to their electric power distribution system. LIPA paid for the emergency repair work in November to restore service as quickly as possible. The FEMA public assistance grant reimburses LIPA for much of the costs.
