I believe that good transportation mobility is one of the key issues in attracting businesses with good jobs to the Atlanta area. Unfortunately over a thirty year time frame our transportation capacity has not kept pace with the growth in population. Now, with construction and maintenance costs skyrocketing (based mainly on the cost of materials) while we face record recession based revenue reductions, we are faced with some tough choices in our attempt to move ahead.
In both 2008 and 2009 your legislature came within just a few votes of presenting you a transportation plan that would have provided you the opportunity to vote on a 1% sales tax increase dedicated to new road development. It had a specific set of projects of major importance to the Metro area as well as the state of Georgia. Fiscal responsibility was maintained by sun setting the law after ten years. I intend to support a like type plan in the 2010 session so that you can be the final arbiters of its value.
