Today, U.S. Senator Mark Udall joined his colleagues in voting to confirm Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. After the vote, Senator Udall released the following statement:
"Today, I was pleased to join my colleagues from both parties to confirm Elena Kagan as the 112th Supreme Court Justice. The Supreme Court is the ultimate guardian of our Constitution, and I am confident that she will bring her passion for justice and the rule of law to defending and supporting it. Elena Kagan will add a new voice and perspective to the Court as it considers questions that impact every Coloradan and every American.
"Over the next few decades, the Supreme Court will be asked to hear cases involving our 1st Amendment rights, federalism, privacy, campaign finance, and hundreds of other issues that will influence how laws are enforced and interpreted for future generations. As a lawmaker sworn to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States,' entrusting someone with the responsibility to ensure that the laws my colleagues and I craft are applied fairly and in respect to the Constitution is not a task I take lightly.
"I gave Elena Kagan's nomination much consideration, and I'm confident that the Senate made the right choice in confirming her. Congratulations, Justice Kagan."
