I believe that the role of the State Board of Education is to set policy and leave the teaching to teachers, the administrating to administrators and the development of curriculum standards to those knowledgeable in each field. As a state board member, I will be a proponent for public education. I will lobby the legislature for laws that support public education. I will gather and review input and information on important issues in order to make good decisions.
I believe that the opinions of those in my district are important. I will listen to constituents, respect their diversity of opinion, and thoughtfully consider their input.
I believe that decisions on educational issues should be made at the local level as often as possible. Communities in our state are quite different. Their economies and social values differ. Local boards of education are in tune with the needs of their own communities. The State Board of Education should set the standards of excellence and allow each local school board to implement procedures for achieving this excellence for all students.
