Federal funding for abortion has been regulated by a patchwork of policies for more than 30 years. These separate measures keep the American taxpayer from funding the destruction of innocent human life through abortion, and many have to be renewed each year. Rep. Zach Wamp became an original co-sponsor of legislation to institute a consistent, government-wide prohibition on abortion funding.
"Our nation has had various policies in place since 1977 to prevent taxpayer dollars from funding abortions because it is so offensive to many in our country," said Rep. Wamp, who has a 100 percent pro-life rating from the National Right to Life Committee. "The Constitution protects life and we must continue fighting to protect all innocent life from conception forward. This is a comprehensive approach that would permanently bar taxpayer funds from paying for abortions."
The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would reduce the need for many separate abortion funding policies and make sure that all government programs and agencies are included. It would also permanently establish the "conscience clause" in federal law. The conscience clause protects health care providers who are recipients of federal funding from discrimination because they do not provide, pay for, provide coverage of or refer for abortions.
