It's no secret that South Dakota's economy is in trouble. State employees haven't gotten a cost of living increase in 3 years. The governor is intent on closing the much-needed School for the Deaf and making drastic cuts to services. At the same time, his proposed budget increased spending in the Department of Tourism. There are some skewed priorities in Pierre, and District 15 needs a strong advocate standing up for them in our state legislature. These issues are too important to be asleep on the job.
With unemployment in the state climbing to 5%, we need to be doing everything possible to attract jobs to our state. That means investing in wind energy and other green jobs, incentivizing employers to pay a living wage and provide real health benefits to employees, and building a workforce pool that makes South Dakota more attractive to large employers.
