HEADLINE: Democrats Support Immigrant Students at Dream Act Rally;
Students Facing Deportation Deliver 65,000 Petitions to Bush Administration
DATELINE: WASHINGTON, April 21
House and Senate Democrats held a rally yesterday with thousands of immigrant students from across the nation, urging the Bush Administration to support the bipartisan Dream Act, legislation that would allow qualified immigrant students to attend college and provide a pathway to legalization. A mock graduation was held at the U.S. Capitol steps this morning to draw attention to the plight of these hardworking qualified students, many of whom face deportation.
"If President Bush is serious about leaving no child behind, he must convert rhetoric into reality and urge the Republicans in Congress to approve the Dream Act," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said. "For too long, and through no fault of their own, qualified immigrant students have faced countless roadblocks in their aspirations to reach their maximum potential. Congress must pass the bipartisan bill this year, before countless students are left without the opportunities they need to achieve the American Dream and become full and productive members of society."
