Representative Ann Kirkpatrick today issued the following statement in response to the Department of Education's announcement that Arizona is a finalist for the second round of the Race to the Top competition. Race to the Top is a national initiative to spur improvement in state and local K-12 education. In May, Rep. Kirkpatrick sent a letter (attached) to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan touting Arizona's results-based system and urging the federal government to back the state's application for Race to the Top resources to support continued efforts for education reform. Her comments were as follows:
"Congratulations to our teachers and school administrators on this important accomplishment. This is proof of your creativity and hard work to make sure our children get the education they need to get well-paying jobs and succeed in the global economy. I am happy to see Arizona's leadership recognized and proud of my efforts to ensure the Department of Education gives our state the consideration it deserves as the process moves forward."
