Issue Position: Transportation

Issue Position

Tolleson Delivers Throughout 2007, the Joint Transportation Funding Study Committee met all across the state. The end result of their efforts were several major initiatives.

HB 1019 created the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank to provide low interest loans to local communities for transportation projects, thus saving local taxpayers money on financing infrastructure projects. HB 1189 requires the DOT to create a Statewide Strategic Transportation Plan by June 30, 2009
and each year thereafter. Likewise, SB 417 requires the DOT Commissioner to publish benchmarks and a completion schedule annually for all projects over a million dollars. All of these great initiatives passed.

I also supported SR 845, a constitutional amendment that would have allowed the voters to vote on a one cent sales tax increase to fund regional transportation projects, but it unfortunately failed to pass. Good things are finally happening in transportation. There are new efforts to reform DOT and there is broad support around the state for new transportation funding. I look forward to continuing to work with GDOT, the Governor, the Lt. Governor, and legislative leaders to find workable solutions to our growing transportation needs.
