Bunning: Democrats Delay Help For Unemployed So They Can Drive Up Deficit

U.S. Senator Jim Bunning issued the following statement on the continued refusal of Senate Democrats to pay for the extension of unemployment benefits.

"For over five months now there has been an ongoing fight in the United States Senate over whether or not to pay for the extension of unemployment benefits. These benefits never would have expired in the first place if Democrats hadn't stubbornly refused to pay for them. Republicans have offered several different ways to pay for these benefits, including paying for the extension with unused stimulus funds, but Democrats have rejected all our ideas.

"Despite preaching fiscal responsibility and even passing pay-as-you-go rules earlier this year, Democrats continue to show the American people that they cannot be trusted to rein in deficit spending. Instead of doing the fiscally responsible thing and paying for it, Democrats allowed these benefits to expire until they had the votes to pass a bill that will add $34 billion more to our $13 trillion national debt.

"As a result of these reckless and destructive decisions not to pay for our spending, Democrats are condemning our children and grandchildren to a lifetime of higher taxes and a lower standard of living. This is unacceptable and I will continue to fight to ensure that future spending is fully paid for."
