Tennesseans deserve a Governor with a proven record of fighting to protect the unborn. Under my leadership, the Senate has again passed legislation to restore the voice of the voters when it comes to commonsense abortion restrictions.
In 2000, a liberal state Supreme Court struck down provisions allowing women to receive "informed consent" information about abortion and requiring 48-hour waiting period before receiving an abortion. That ruling made Tennessee more liberal on abortion than virtually any state in the union and made the right to abortion a "fundamental right" in Tennessee.
As Governor, I will lead the fight to put these common sense restrictions back into law.
I also successfully worked to remove public funding for abortion providers. Tennesseans were outraged not long ago when a video surfaced showing a girl claiming to be 14-years old being advised by a Planned Parenthood employee to lie about her age in order to obtain an abortion. This illegal act spurred legislation , which I led passage of, to ensure that family planning funds go to public women's health services providers in lieu of private abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.
