Franken Votes to Protect Minnesota Unemployed

Press Release

Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) joined 59 of his colleagues in voting to end the filibuster which was blocking the extension of unemployment insurance benefits to unemployed Americans. Once passed, the bill will extend benefits for the unemployed until November 2010.

"I've been all across the state talking to Minnesotans who are unemployed," said Sen. Franken. "These are people who want to work, people whose identities are tied up in their ability to work, and people who are depressed because they can't work. Today the Senate took a big step forward in making sure that these Minnesotans can pay their bills and put food on the table."

The unemployment benefits of approximately 21,600 Minnesotans and 2,502,000 Americans were affected as of July 17, 2010 because Senate Republicans blocked the extension of federal unemployment insurance programs.
