U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) released the following statement rejecting claims that Pennsylvania and New Mexico's pre-existing condition insurance pools established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act allow for federal funding of abortion:
"Some conservative groups continue to spread misinformation about whether or not pre-existing condition insurance pools will use federal dollars for elective abortion services. The President's Executive Order makes clear that federal funds may not be used for abortion under the Affordable Care Act -- including the pre-existing condition insurance pools currently being implemented in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and other states across the country.
In accordance with the Executive Order, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as the Pennsylvania and New Mexico state authorities have indicated that they will comply with the Executive Order and no federal funds will be used to provide for abortion services. Those claiming otherwise are simply putting politics above protecting life. These pre-existing condition insurance pools will prevent funding of abortion with federal dollars while also protecting the lives of those who need health care services for their pre-existing conditions."
