On Monday, Senator Ted Kaufman (D-DE) met with Vice President Joe Biden in Baghdad to discuss their visits to Iraq. Both underscored the importance of a long-term strategic relationship between the United States and Iraq. Senator Kaufman, on his fourth trip to Iraq, also met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Dr. Ayad Allawi to convey a message of partnership and support, and to urge the two sides to form a government. He was joined by Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. (D-PA) and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH).
"As the United States transitions its firm commitment in Iraq from military to civilian-led, we urge you to work quickly to form a government, so we can continue to work together to build an even stronger partnership for the future," Kaufman said.
Senator Kaufman had dinner with soldiers from the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Camp Prosperity in Baghdad. "One day, you will look back on the work you're doing now and be proud that when your country needed you, you answered the call," he told them. After dinner he recorded a message of support for the troops along with Senators Shaheen and Casey.
