Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced that he would relieve General Stanley McChrystal as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan and nominate General David Petraeus to replace him:
"On more than one occasion, General McChrystal has been wrong to demonstrate disrespect for civilian authority over the military. And he was right to submit his resignation today. I commend the President for not missing a beat in ensuring we stay focused on protecting the American people by fighting to defeat and dismantle Al Qaeda.
"Every chance we get, we must express our gratitude to our troops on the ground for their patriotism, courage, and service to our country."
