Governor Bill Richardson announced today that he is investing $1 million into
public safety. The federal stimulus money will allow the Department of Public Safety to purchase 11 new police cars and pay for additional fuel for the State Police fleet.
"I am committed to keeping officers on the roads and protecting communities, especially in rural New Mexico," Governor Richardson said. "As we continue to work through this national recession, I want to be sure that law enforcement has the resources to battle drunk driving and ensuring public safety."
The $1 million in federal money will help cover the deficit created when the Legislature reduced the State Police car and fuel budget, which would have limited the number of miles an officer could drive each month.
Governor Richardson is using discretionary money from the Government Services Fund to allow
the Department to:
* Use $250,000 to purchase 11 new cars
* Use $750,000 to boost the fuel budget
"Without this funding we would have been forced to limit the State Police presence and response times," said State Police Chief Faron Segotta.
