Congressman Jerry Moran issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court today struck down Chicago's handgun ban, ruling that the Second Amendment right of individuals to keep and bear arms applies to state and local governments. Moran joined other Members of Congress in signing an amicus curiae, or "friend of the court," brief supporting gun rights in the McDonald v. City of Chicago case.
"The Supreme Court's decision striking down Chicago's unconstitutional gun ban is another great victory for law-abiding gun owners," Moran said. "The message it sends to state and local governments across the country is clear: you cannot violate the Second Amendment freedoms of law-abiding Americans. Two years ago, the Supreme Court overturned Washington, D.C.'s gun ban and in an historic decision affirmed an individual's Second Amendment right. Now, the law of the land confirms what we all know to be true: that all Americans, not just those living in our nation's capital, enjoy this fundamental right and are to be protected from government intrusion."
