Speier Statement on Supreme Court's UC Hastings Decision

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D- San Mateo/ San Francisco) issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court decision on Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, 08-1371:

"I am pleased the Supreme Court today decided that the First Amendment does not require a public university to validate discrimination. This decision is especially fitting on the day after Gay Pride Day when we celebrate equality and inclusion. The court rejected an appeal by a Christian group, the Christian Legal Society, which sued to get funding and recognition from my alma mater, UC Hastings. Voting members of the group are required to sign a statement of faith that labels homosexuality as immoral. I believe that religious and sexual discrimination is always wrong. While the members of the CLS have the right to believe what they want, they have no right to ask a public school to subsidize or validate those beliefs. The ruling today is welcome step towards equality and fairness."
