Today, Paul Hodes released the following statement on the news that a tritium leak discovered at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant was located in a portion of the plant that had gone uninspected for nearly forty years.
"Today, it was revealed that key areas of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant were allowed to go uninspected for almost four decades. For 40 years, inadequate oversight has allowed the safety problems we are forced to deal with today to go unchecked. It is long past time for Entergy to take responsibility for its failure to reassure families living near the plant and to stop the growing number of radioactive leaks. As questions about ongoing institutional problems in the plant's safety record continue to grow, the need to shut this plant down for a thorough safety audit becomes more and more apparent."
