Comment On The Grand Opening Of The Upper Valley Haven's Adult Shelter

In February, Sen. Patrick Leahy toured the White River Junction construction site of the Upper Valley Haven's new shelter for homeless adults and announced a $200,000 federal appropriation for the facility. The Upper Valley Haven celebrated the grand opening of the facility on Thursday evening. Leahy was in Washington Thursday afternoon, where he is working on finalizing the Wall Street Reform bill as a member of the conference committee negotiating the final bill, and preparing for next week's Supreme Court nomination hearings.]

"The Upper Valley Haven officially opens a critical piece of social infrastructure in the Upper Valley tonight," said Leahy. "Homelessness is not just an urban problem. It is a scourge that grips too many people right here in Vermont and New Hampshire. This new shelter treats an underserved population -- adults without children, including veterans who either live in the area or who come to the area to seek care from the Veterans Administration. Combined with the Upper Valley Haven's proven poverty-busting social programming, this facility will give people, including men and women who served their country, a safe place to rest and a possibly a route out of poverty."
