Hagan Statement On Juneteenth

Statement

Date: June 18, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) released the following statement today in honor of Juneteenth, or "Freedom Day," celebrated every year to commemorate the date the final group of African American slaves were freed.

"On June 19, 1865, the last slaves were liberated in Galveston, Texas. This was more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Tomorrow, we will commemorate this historic liberation with Juneteenth, or "Freedom Day." It marks the end of a dark chapter in our nation's history and honors the Americans who were unjustly enslaved. It is also an occasion to recognize the progress we must continue making to ensure our country lives up to its ideals of "liberty and justice for all.' "
