Sullivan Shocked at BP's Dismal Safety Record

Statement

Date: June 17, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman John Sullivan issued the following statement after BP CEO's Tony Hayward testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Below is his statement following the hearing.

"I'm shocked by Mr. Hayward's lack of preparation and his arrogance in providing real and concrete answers in to this tragedy. Both Republican and Democrat Members of my committee were disturbed by British Petroleum's shocking record of OSHA violations over the past few years. We must hold BP responsible for this spill and questions still remain on why BP has one of the worst safety records of any major oil company operating in the United States. This is a problem of BP's lack of an competent safety culture and not the domestic oil and gas industry at large.

The bottom line is the American taxpayer should not spend a dime on the clean up from this spill. This is BP's responsibility and they must bear the entire financial burden for this disaster. I believe we must do everything in our power to cap the leak, find out what caused the explosion and to ensure nothing like this ever happens again."
