We all invest a great amount of time, energy, and through taxes -- money, in our local schools. We want them to be places our children can learn and develop at the direction of the best teachers, and in cooperation with their families in a safe environment. I believe the best formula for a good learning environment is strong local control of educational systems.
Who knows better the needs of children than their families, parents and those in their neighborhoods? The state clearly has a role in education funding, but I will work to forge a closer relationship between state and local school boards. I recently made a promise to the Omaha Public School Board, and to this community to be engaged, accessible and part of the process in every way I can. I will also insist on accountability from the local boards.
We need to set a goal to spend every cent of every dollar possible in the classroom or in support of student programs. Our students are our future and our greatest investment.
