Press Release

Date: June 9, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass Congressman Scott Murphy's (NY-20) bipartisan legislation, House Resolution 1178, requiring the Clerk of the House to compile the Congressional Budget Office's cost estimates for each bill considered before the House and make these scores, along with the link to the official CBO website, available on the Clerk's official website. This legislation will allow everyone, both Members and constituents, to know the true financial impact of any piece of legislation that comes before the House.

"For me, openness and transparency is not just something I talk about, it's something I practice," said Murphy. "Since coming to Congress just one year ago, I have looked for opportunities to increase the dialogue between Congress and our constituents, and to make sure that they know exactly what I am doing here in Washington. This commonsense legislation will give Upstate New Yorkers more of the information they need to see how legislation will affect them and their families. By making sure that we are open and transparent in everything we do here in Congress, we can begin to restore the public's trust in this body."

Since he has taken office, Murphy has worked to restore openness and transparency in government, including voluntarily putting his daily schedule online to keep track of who he is meeting with and the projects that he is working on. Additionally, he has visited all 137 towns and held over 100 public meetings in the past year to discuss the important local and national affecting Upstate New York. This legislation is another step in his commitment to maintaining that openness and transparency.
