U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1929, which imposes new sanctions on the Iranian leadership for its continued defiance of international demands that Iran peacefully address concerns about its nuclear program. The Resolution builds on three previous rounds of UN sanctions and reaffirms the international community's willingness to resolve the issue through negotiations if Iran takes specific steps to restore international confidence in its nuclear program.
"I support the Obama Administration's efforts to pass the new Iran sanctions resolutions in the United Nations Security Council. Iran must live up to its obligations to the international community by suspending its uranium enrichment program and verifiably ending any pursuit of nuclear weapons. While sanctions are blunt instruments that rarely achieve their stated goals by pressuring those in power, the Security Council rightfully paid careful attention to targeting these sanctions at the regime rather than the people of Iran. The door to a peaceful, diplomatic solution always should remain open, but Iran repeatedly has refused to cooperate on this issue. It is past time for tougher measures. The U.S. Congress soon will pass additional sanctions, which I urge the Obama Administration to implement swiftly," Holt said.
