Stupak Announces Business Enterprise Grants to Create, Retain 38 Jobs in Northern Michigan

U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced three grants totaling $105,000 to fund business enterprises in northern Michigan and create and retain up to 38 jobs in Gladwin and Roscommon Counties. The city of Gladwin and Kirtland Community College in Roscommon received the grants as a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business Enterprise Grant program.

"These grants will help local entrepreneurs and educators who are working to grow local economies and improve our communities in northern Michigan." Stupak said. "We must do everything we can to help create and save jobs in our communities and I am pleased with the USDA's investment in these rural enterprises."

The city of Gladwin received two grants totaling $65,000 to assist local businesses. The first grant, for $45,000 will be used to assist the construction of a Farmers Market, which will help approximately 18 local growers. The second grant, for $20,000 will make improvements to a small business incubator, creating two jobs.

Kirtland Community College received a $40,000 grant to assist in a feasibility test for a fine art and craft gallery, which will save approximately 18 jobs. Kirtland Community College includes campuses in Gaylord and West Branch.

The Rural Business Enterprise Grant program provides grants for rural projects that finance and facilitate development of small and emerging rural businesses help fund distance learning networks, and help fund employment related adult education programs.
