I love public education. Our public schools and community colleges are a source of hope for our students, their families, and our communities. I am committed to see that every student in Alabama has the opportunity to receive an excellent education. This is a critical time in Alabama education: we continue to build on some of our nation's best instructional initiatives and highest standards while our schools struggle under the weight of decreasing funding. It is absolutely crucial that your State Board of Education maintain its high expectations, while working with the Governor and the legislature to see that our students and teachers have the necessary resources they need to succeed.

As a state, Alabama must:

*Never forget that parents are the first and most important teachers a child has. Families need to be strengthened and parents must be involved in the education of their children.
*Provide a safe school environment for students and staff.
*Continually identify and implement the best practices in education for our students.
*Maintain high standards in all grades and subjects and provide the resources to meet our high expectations.
*Provide strong support for its community and technical colleges. We must prepare our students for further educational opportunities and prepare our workforce for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
*Help our students address barriers to learning based on socioeconomic or physical and emotional problems. Many of our students arrive at school with challenges, not of their own making, that would be difficult for an adult to overcome.
*Vigorously address the problem of high school drop-outs.

The future of Alabama's students is very much in our hands. I have been in the business of protecting life and saving lives for over a quarter of a century. In our schools, I believe lives are at stake. Decisions made now will affect not only today's students and their families, but generations yet to come. If you believe as I do, then you will support my bid as a Republican for the Sixth District seat on Alabama's State Board of Education.
