Today was the last session day before a weeklong district work period. Unfortunately, Congress is leaving Washington without passing two critical pieces of legislation: a fiscal year 2011 budget and stronger sanctions on Iran. We are now six weeks past the deadline for the budget, but the House Budget Committee has not even begun to consider a plan. Without a budget, the Appropriations Committees will not be sufficiently restrained from overspending. Iran sanctions legislation was passed by both the House and the Senate with overwhelming support. The House issued instructions just a few weeks ago that differences between the bills should be reconciled and final legislation passed before Memorial Day. Unfortunately, Democratic leadership has not moved the legislation forward.
