8th District Constituents Speak Out On Gov't Spending, Health Care and Taxes

Press Release

Date: June 3, 2010

Small business operators, elected officials and community activists from Hamilton to Celina gathered at the Savannah Center in West Chester on Tuesday with Congressman Boehner to discuss House Republicans' new innovative agenda project, America Speaking Out. Opening up the conversation, Boehner said that the goal of America Speaking Out is to give Americans who don't feel like their voice is being heard in Washington a say in building a better America.

"As Republicans, we know our principles … and we're going to use them to build a new governing agenda rooted in our principles of smaller, more accountable government," Boehner said. "But we want the American people engaged in this process from the start. At America Speaking Out, you can submit policy ideas, vote for ideas you like, and discuss your priorities…"

After explaining the nuts and bolts of AmericaSpeakingOut.com, Boehner opened the floor to the audience to collect ideas and listen to concerns on topics ranging from government spending to immigration and health care.

With unemployment in Ohio at nearly 11 percent, much of the conversation focused on the best way to spur job creation.

"High taxes; more regulation; we are no longer awarding innovation like we did 20 or 30 years ago. Get the government out of the way, cut the size of government significantly to lower the tax burden, and watch what the American entrepreneur can do," George from West Chester said.

Following up, Marv from Greenville and George from Hamilton suggested scrapping the slew of new legislative proposals -- including the new health care law, financial regulation legislation, and Washington Democrats' "cap and trade' national energy tax -- that are expanding the reach of government at an alarming rate, and filling employers with uncertainty.

"That's one of the problems in my business…. How do I continue to grow? Before, I knew what my tax base was, I knew what to do… because I knew what my plan was. I can't set up a plan right now," Rick from Tipp city added.

At the conclusion of the discussion, Boehner thanked attendees for sharing their ideas, and encouraged everyone to share America Speaking Out with their friends, neighbors and communities.

"We are going to prove to the American people that we can listen and that they can be involved in straightening out their government," he said.
