Conserving Our Natural Resources

Funding the Conservation Bank. Acting as a floor leader to create the South Carolina Conservation Bank helped to preserve thousands of acres of natural and historic lands vital to our tourism and recreation economies and our way of life. Unfortunately, cuts to the Conservation Bank have hampered that effort. As governor, Vincent will ensure the Conservation Bank is adequately funded to ensure these resources are sustained for future generations of South Carolinians.

Sustainable Use of Our Waters. South Carolina needs to protect its waters. As chair of the Wateree-Catawba Bi-State River Commission, Vincent knows first-hand the importance of a workable water withdrawal permitting system. And as governor, he will prioritize the implementation of a water withdrawal system in South Carolina.

DHEC Reform. Our Department of Health and Environmental Control has dedicated professionals, but is understaffed and not directly accountable to the governor's office. Neither business nor conservation is well served by this arrangement. Vincent supports restructuring DHEC and ensuring the agency has the resources necessary to fulfill its vital mission for our state.

Securing our Energy Future. South Carolina is poised to be a leader in energy-efficiency and alternative-energy technologies that will result in thousands of jobs and billions of additional dollars in our state's economy. South Carolina must secure its energy future and grow our energy economy by pursuing efficiency measures such as weatherization, and by promoting investment in alternative energy such as solar, wind, and bio-fuels.

Restoring the Department of Natural Resources. South Carolina's DNR budget has been disproportionately slashed in the last two years, rendering our state unable to protect its natural resources as we should. Our wildlife officers are underpaid. As governor, Vincent will work to ensure DNR has the resources it needs to ensure South Carolina's recreation and tourism economies, as well as our way of life, are not jeopardized by short-sighted budget cuts.

Reinvigorating Rural South Carolina. South Carolina's rural areas and small towns are in desperate need of investment and economic growth. We have a tremendous opportunity to marry the conservation ethic of our state with economic revitalization in our rural areas. An increased focus on local farming initiatives, rural and historical tourism, and investment in bio-fuels can help revitalize or rural areas.

Fighting to Keep Nuclear Waste out of our State. When votes were close in the legislature, Vincent stood his ground to oppose the continued importation of nuclear waste into South Carolina.
