Mack: The Battle for Free Speech Continues with Debate on Arizona Immigration Law

Statement

Date: May 20, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) issued the following statement today about the ongoing debate surrounding the Arizona immigration law in light of Mexican President Felipe Calderón's visit to the United States. Mack was one of the first Republican Members of Congress to come out strongly against the law earlier this month.

Mack said:

"As we near Memorial Day, a day to honor and remember those who fought and died to protect our freedom, we should remember that the battle for freedom is always ongoing at home and abroad.

"As General Douglas MacArthur once said, "No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation."

"I too believe that we must be forever vigilant in the preservation of our freedom, and we must do so with neither prejudice nor malice.

"I am proud to live in a country that is free, albeit often contentious. The Arizona immigration law is indeed contentious and our ability to debate is essential to our core.

"I have received statements of condemnation and praise because of my position in opposition to the Arizona law. I am, however, encouraged, not disappointed, in this reaction. Free speech in America is our hallmark and it must continue. Let the debate continue and let those of principle continue to stand firm. I will remain ever vigilant in the preservation of free speech."
