Vehicles will have the latest in clean diesel engine technology

Today Congressman John Salazar announced a grant totaling $44,878 to improve the Snowmass Village shuttle bus service. The grant funding will be combined with local funding and other sources to replace six buses in the current fleet. The new vehicles will have the latest in clean diesel engines that will reduce green house gas emissions. The replacement of these vehicles will help boost vehicle utilization, control costs by minimizing maintenance and repair of worn out parts, and improve fuel efficiency. In addition to higher carrying capacity and low-floor technology the new vehicles will help increase efficiency by carrying more people and preserve service frequency by cutting boarding and alighting time.

Congressman Salazar offered the following comment on the funding:

"Funding like this creates jobs, improves the tourist experience and encourages folks to use public transportation. This funding will help Snowmass Village continue to provide safe and efficient bus service for residents and visitors to the area. I will continue to support projects like these; projects that improve our mass transit system and keep tourists and locals moving through Colorado's Third Congressional district.

David Peckler, Transportation Director for the Town of Snowmass Village issued the following statement on the grant announcement:

"The grant funding will be combined with local funding and other sources to replace six buses in our current fleet that have exceeded their projected lifecycle. The Town has worked with Akron, Ohio to "piggyback" on their contract with Gillig Corporation to purchase four vehicles with 2009 and 2010 appropriations, with an option to purchase two more vehicles with our 2011 appropriations. Recognizing the needs and benefits of a healthy transit system throughout the state is a global view that I wish all the delegates would embrace. I would like to thank Congressman John Salazar for his assistance to our capital acquisitions in support of our transit services."
